Ways-of-working

Planning

Depending on the level of granularity and focus, we can create a plan at the strategic, tactical, or operational level. Each level addresses different aspects of your project. Here’s how you can approach planning for each level:

1. Strategic Level Planning
2. Tactical level planning
3. Operational Level Planning

1. Strategic Level Planning:

Focus

Business model, corporate strategy, competition, and the entire organization within the competitive landscape.

Scope

Business Model Alignment: Understand how knowledge and data management aligns with your business model. Identify strategic goals related to knowledge utilization, innovation, and competitive advantage.

Corporate Strategy Integration: Ensure that knowledge and data management aligns with the overall corporate strategy. Define how knowledge contributes to achieving strategic objectives.

Competitive Landscape Analysis: Assess competitors’ knowledge practices. Identify threats and opportunities within the competitive landscape.

Time Horizon

Multiple years (quarterly pace).

Key Steps

1. Gap Analysis: Compare your existing knowledge map to the strategic goals. Identify gaps in knowledge coverage, accessibility, and alignment with strategic priorities.

2. Goal Definition: Set clear, measurable goals related to knowledge utilization, innovation, and competitive advantage.

3. Resource Allocation: Allocate resources (budget, personnel, technology) to support knowledge initiatives.

4. Quarterly Milestones: Define quarterly milestones, Key Metrics and Deliverables for achieving strategic goals.

2. Tactical Level Planning:

Focus

Governance, organization, culture, and management within functional teams or organizational units.

Time Horizon

One to three years (monthly pace).

Scope

Governance Framework: Establish governance structures for knowledge management. Define roles, responsibilities, and decision-making processes.

Organizational Culture: Foster a knowledge-sharing and data appreciating culture. Address resistance to change.

Organization and Management Practices: Implement processes for capturing, organizing, and sharing knowledge and data.

Key Steps

Gap Analysis: Compare your knowledge map to tactical goals (e.g., improving team collaboration, reducing duplication). Identify gaps in knowledge processes, cultural norms, and team dynamics.

Task Breakdown: Create a task list (e.g., content creation, training programs, knowledge audits, knowledge transfer and sharing structure).

Timeline and KPIs: Set monthly milestones and key performance indicators (KPIs) for knowledge adoption.

Resource Allocation and Governance: Assign team data & knowledge roles and allocate time for knowledge-related tasks. Alleviate hurdles to change.

Sharing of results

3. Operational Level Planning:

Focus

Concrete actions, resources, and deliverables related to specific knowledge gaps or issues.

Time Horizon

One quarter to one year (weekly pace).

Scope

Knowledge Gap Resolution: Address specific gaps identified in the knowledge map.

Issue-Specific Actions: Tackle urgent knowledge-related issues (e.g., outdated documentation, lack of training materials).

Key Steps

Gap-Specific Tasks: Break down actions needed to close knowledge gaps (e.g., updating manuals, creating FAQs).

Resource Allocation: Assign responsibilities and allocate resources (people, tools, time).

Weekly Deliverables: Set weekly deliverables (e.g., revised documentation, training sessions).

Feedback Loop: Continuously collect feedback and adjust operational actions.

Recognition of efforts

We are drowning in information but are starved for knowledge.
